Driver Bios

Paul Brown

Background

Paul had an appetite for motorsport at a young age, entering his first race at the age of 16 and running his first professional race at 23. His first job in pro racing was working on the Saleen Autosport race team beginning in 1986, helping them to sweep all four categories in the Escort Endurance Series Championship in 1987. That series evolved into the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge, wherein Paul competed against some of the best drivers in road racing, finishing over half of the events he ran in the top 10. He has also taken the experience he's gained on track and used it to help other drivers. From coaching trackside, to managing one of the largest and most successful race shops and retail outlets in the Midwest, doing everything from modifying street rods to building complete racing chassis. Paul's mechanical knowledge of the cars he drives, his innate car control skills and his focus and dedication to the sport, all combine to make him a fearsome and noteworthy competitor.

Carol Hollfelder

Background

Carol Hollfelder's interest in cars goes back to her childhood. Her parents collect exotic and vintage cars. A collection that begun in 1970 with her mother's purchase of a used Sunbeam Tiger. Carol spent time with her father as she was growing up learning about automobiles, first learning how they work, then learning to drive. Cars were and are a family passion. Both of her parents race vintage cars under the banner of Tiger Racing. So named for her mother's early involvement with the British marque. Although Carol has always loved cars, she began competing one horse at a time at the age of nine. She rode hunters and jumpers until she was injured in a motorcycle accident in 1987 at the age of 18. Due to a spinal cord injury, she could no longer compete as an equestrian so she turned her drive for competition towards sportcars. Racing began with club events at Willow Springs, Riverside Raceway and other historic tracks. Driving courses first then club races. Carol began using her street car, a Toyota Supra, in these events. It was an automatic because a decade ago there were no hand controls for a manual transmission. It wasn't until Clay Regazzoni responded to a letter from her father Tom Hollfelder in 1994 that a set was found to install on her Mondial Quattrovalvole. Clay came to California to compete in the Long Beach Grand Prix bringing with him three technicians and a set of hand controls with which he subsequently taught Carol how to drive. In 1997, Ferrari introduced the F1 paddle shifter option on their 355. That was the first chance that Carol had to race competitively. In 1999, she won SCCA's Cal Club Regional Championship in the T1 class. However, once she moved up to pro racing in the Speed World Challenge GT series it became clear that the Ferrari wasn't competitive enough, so the search for a new race car began. In 2003, Carol began campaigning a Ford Mustang equipped with Ford's ASM/SSM transmission out of their Aston Martin Vanquish. She also drives with a brake/throttle system that was designed by her father Tom Hollfelder and fabricated by Steele Therkleson, mechanic on the Le Mans winning 1966-67 Ford GT40 teams.

Current and Future Interests
Carol's interests run from following Formula 1 racing to reading science fiction and fantasy novels. Like many other people today, she is an Internet user. She frequently surfs the Net for racing information and to communicate with friends. As a paraplegic, Carol has been faced with many obstacles which the able-bodied never confront. As a result of this, she is extremely interested in the issues and research affecting the disabled. Carol hopes to bring people's attention to the hand control system that she uses. In doing so, she hopes to show other people with disabilities that nothing is beyond their reach, not even the ultra competitive world of motorsports. She is also looking ahead in her own driving. Endurance racing with her husband at Daytona is a goal that she looks forward to achieving.
